I post in the middle of the night while sleep deprived in a foreign country, and though I can’t always promise that entries will be error and sarcasm free. Thanks for looking past the mess and enjoy. I also believe and hope that through my journal you will find some beauty in cross-cultural dialog, education, and friendship. This list is for her, I won't be learning to verify and edit this list but if you know of more resources, add them in the comments. Also these tips are specific to my friend Lisa, but I think they will help you will all of your language learning endeavor</p><p><br /></p><p>1. Plan your strategy</p><p><br />2. Get some flash cards -</p><p>Grab 5 - 10 flash cards and put phrases on them. Decide to practice one card a day for the first 5 days.</p><p>Then have a series of flash cards with sentences and fill in the blanks. Practice one set per day.<br />I like ______. Apples cake. To run. Running. Reading. <br />I am in Estonia for my husband's work. I am here because it is ______. Pretty. Exciting. Beacuase I love music history. <br /><br />Have another series of<a href="https://www.fluentin3months.com/conversational-connectors-how-to-fake-having-a-conversation-just-after-starting-to-learn-a-language/" target="_blank"> Conversational Connectors</a> such as "that is a good idea, I actually think that, by the way, I don't think it's true that, between you and me, can I tell you more about it," and more.</p><p>I would suggest having 15 or 30 cards and going over them several times. Long term memory is used when we allow ourselves to forget and relearn. Don't worry if you didn't learn everything one each card the first time through. You practice a card each day. That does not mean you are perfect at that card</p><p><br />3. Start a note pad document in your phone for phrases you hear on the street, in the store, on the bus, at the park, everywhere. Take notes. What you hear over and over will be more important than what you learn in a class. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHPt2tNup6SHNUlz831bX0YF4qB2GSqSpvbornCQBqZMC_BiD5vWR-Q9wkgd1fJzPYWRM8Q2vOl8uo5QDC4Pe7Fshxfnsx6jXFskRuoki_ccIe9CyJnNBZnz6Dv-mx1CDyC7SytC2ShMBe/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1116" data-original-width="1632" height="219" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHPt2tNup6SHNUlz831bX0YF4qB2GSqSpvbornCQBqZMC_BiD5vWR-Q9wkgd1fJzPYWRM8Q2vOl8uo5QDC4Pe7Fshxfnsx6jXFskRuoki_ccIe9CyJnNBZnz6Dv-mx1CDyC7SytC2ShMBe/" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><b>Basics and Phrases </b><br />This is where you will get the informations for your first section of not cards.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL-sAFFQfxY" target="_blank">Video about Estonian </a></p><p><a href="https://omniglot.com/writing/estonian.htm" target="_blank">About and Alphabet</a></p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5wk5C0OOw8" target="_blank">Phrases on YouTube </a></p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFK7osEHB5Q" target="_blank">Another Phrase Video</a> </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4x4DReUhxI" target="_blank">300 Phrase Video</a></p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGThmZ-FIik" target="_blank">Humorous List</a> - PG+ Has some good cognates in it and swearing </p><p><br /></p><p><b>Conversation and Phrases</b> <br /></p><p>EstonianPod101 now <a href="https://www.101languages.net/estonian/" target="_blank">101Languages</a> </p><p><a href="https://omniglot.com/language/phrases/estonian.php" target="_blank">Omniglot Estonian</a> </p><p><a href="https://www.livelingua.com/course/peace_corps/estonian_language_lessons" target="_blank">Live Lingua</a> - Course Files Via the Peace Corps</p><p><br /></p><p><b>Listening</b> </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoCRO37XpAg" target="_blank">Jesus Story on You Tube</a> </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp8v-UGuzqdMKUOfhWlBrgw" target="_blank">The Sound of Estonian</a> - You Tube Channel </p><p><br /></p><p><b>Have fun</b></p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL44x1kCfNc" target="_blank">How to have an Estonian accent </a>- If you can have fun you can trick your brain into learning. <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Grave site in Thaoumazou, Haiti near Port du Prince</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I remember being in Haiti and learning about burial practices. Tombs are rented. When a family can no longer pay rent, the bodies are dumped on the hillside and the tomb is used for someone else. In Hawaii it was a cultural practice to burry your loved ones in your yard so that they are kept close. At the Grand Wailea in Maui they have two or three mass burial sites of the bodies that were found when building the foundation of the hotel. The hotel respectfully moved the bodies into designated cultural sites.
<br />
<br />
I have always been interested in cultural things that all humans experience. And even more specifically the mundane, daily things like different bathroom styles, food preparation and processing, textile design, worship ceremonies, and what people do with those who have passed away. So many aspects of life come with important, and even sacred, rituals.
<br />
<br />
I never thought I would live in a period in time where such rituals are being changed due to a global pandemic and the rates that people are dying and spreading a disease.<br />
<br />
I’ve been seeing body bag videos for months now, as an online teacher in China this virus did not spring up out of nowhere. It did not come as a surprise. It’s been around for a while. As American news unfolds, we are all seeing similar things that we have been seeing in other areas on global news and major news sources for a couple months. Cities are converting ice rinks into massive cold storage facilities for the dead bodies. We are seeing army trucks taking bodies from churches full of caskets. We hear about laws to determine who will be left to die when resourced run out.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mass grave in Hawaii </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Though the above stories are primarily from Europe, Americans already have grandparents and children going into the hospitals by themselves. Families do not see those who pass away until they are already dead. The old are dying alone. Children are going into hospitals alone. Pregnant women will be delivering babies alone. Funerals and weddings are cancelled or postponed. Doctors are losing patients. Nurses are scared to go to work. Doctors are scared to bring sickness back to their family. New York is running out of cold body storage. And similar laws dictating who will and won’t be given ventilators, if (rather when) we reach that point, are being drafted in the US to protect doctors from needing to make such decisions on their own.
<br />
<br />
Guys, please stay home. Listen to the expert warnings for a while, maybe a long while. Act as if you have the virus already. It’s not going to be easy. There is nothing easy about this situation. It is hard. It is heart-wrenching. And it’s probably going to get worse before it gets better.
<br />
<br />

And to be clear, this is not meant to make you more fearful. Statistically most of us will be ok, especially if we can slow the spread. If we slow it enough, many more will survive. We all have heard this before and people will continue to scoff at the advice, saying it doesn’t make sense, the decisions aren’t fair, and people will likely continue to disrespect authority. Be thankful that it isn't' personal for you yet, but don't be naive.<br />
<br />
I’m so thankful right now that my hope does not come from manmade mantras or rituals. Though important and I am so thankful for what we have in America, I don’t put the bulk of my hope in statistics, individuals, politics, and government. These systems will fail at some point, and likely many times.<br />
<br />
My hope comes from the LORD. I believe Jesus is the God of hope, peace, love, and redemption. And I wish I had more answers to all the hurt and pain right now and theres so much I wish I understood, but I am thankful for the peace that transcends all human understanding and comes from Him alone. My prayer is that you who are crying out to Him will find the peace of Christ through all of this and that you will seek him more sincerely, and be drawn closer to him, than you ever have been in the past. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">ESL class (level 4) from last year</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I had a friend in high school and one day we decided to "play" as many sports in one day as we could. We rode our bikes with confidence and threw footballs with less than perfect spirals. We also tried to rollerblade on an outdoor ice skating rink....that was not our best moment together, but nevertheless, we were able to fumble our way across the rink and survived.<br />
<br />
Today was a bit like that day, but with languages. Some went great, and others, well I was able to say "hello" and "pencil." Even if less than perfect, the amount of languages that I was around and used today was certainly memorable.<br />
<br />
On my way teach my ESL classes this morning, I listened to 20 minutes of a French audio app.<br />
<br />
In the first classroom, my students were From Cuba, Mexico and Somalia. I don't allow other languages in my english classes but from time to time I do get to say "hello" in their languages or after class we will have a small conversation. I only know a few Somali words but I did use them with a grandmother.<br />
<br />
The second class was a very low level class with students from Iraq, Mexico, Somalia, and Karen women from Burma. My co-teacher was able to use Karen, I could understand some of the Arabic for simple things as there were side conversations, and both my co-teacher and I used bits of Spanish to help with reflexives and question words.<br />
<br />
On the way home, I listened to the French audio again.<br />
<br />
I did a training for an upcoming trip and took notes on Islam using Arabic and French words.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Writings with friends in college.</td></tr>

Finally I taught my online VIPKid English classes and used some Chinese with a little brother and I began writing a "Stay Strong Wuhan" video, and posted on FB in Chinese asking my Chinese friends to proof read the script.<br />
<br />
And finally, I responded to a friend from Sudan and told her how much I miss her in sudanese slang Arabic. And I messaged an online friend who is fluent in Urdu and Hindi (maybe Arabic too).<br />
<br />
Oh man, I wish every day was this diverse but I am simultaneously thankful to have these days from time to time. If I could teach my students one thing, it's that it's ok to make mistakes and it's ok to fumble your way through a conversation. It's ok to not be perfect! We don't expect perfection and mistakes are the best way to learn and grow.<br />

However if you live on the East Coast your available hours are 8pm - 10am, with peak hours 6am - 9am. (During Daylight savings time). Friday evening, all Saturday slots and Sunday mornings are also PT or PPR. After one month of not opening any PPT and rarely a few PT, and I'm still growing faster than average. So you keep seeing <a href="https://www.vipkidteachers.com/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=3d7d6bb01815966d216f43a7bdf9760a&refereeId=26728353" target="_blank">VIPKid</a> and you're wondering, "Is this real? Is this too good to be true? Why can't I find what I'm looking for on their official website?"<br />

And I have done a full month worth of research. Here is some of what I have learned.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.vipkidteachers.com/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=3d7d6bb01815966d216f43a7bdf9760a&refereeId=26728353" target="_blank">VIPKid</a> is real and it does pay well. There is a plethora of information out there and I have sorted through it and have compiled all of my favorite resources for you here in this one place?<br />
<br />
<b>Requirements </b><br />
<br />
You need to have a North American accent and a degree. Teaching experience is helpful. There are no minimum teaching hours.<br />
<br />
<b>Process</b><br />
<br />
The process does seem to change on a regular basis. We can choose to see this as a frustration or something that is helping us, as VIPkid teachers, and our students be the best we can be (An example is adding the FREE training courses). As of last week, my experience was as follows...<br />
<br />
<b><a href="https://www.vipkidteachers.com/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=3d7d6bb01815966d216f43a7bdf9760a&refereeId=26728353" target="_blank">Application</a></b> - 3 Requirements must be clear to a computer screening but pay is computed by a human. So include anything that gives you a leg up but make the following requirements very clear.<br />
<br />
1. Bachelors Degree. It can be in anything.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxS186OtkwkKVh0V6w3LBh4nRRXOd_qhQ1IV5Xp1kaffadjtrDhrVTr7ypmFYaTjS5yiTvXYP-hSDiIPnsa83pFYXU7JNdbLb7TVJM83J-MNURxB-YnTUuaFEdXC9ZM9O7z9-u1AtUBz6o/s1600/Screen+Shot+2019-04-06+at+11.09.28+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="658" data-original-width="720" height="292" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxS186OtkwkKVh0V6w3LBh4nRRXOd_qhQ1IV5Xp1kaffadjtrDhrVTr7ypmFYaTjS5yiTvXYP-hSDiIPnsa83pFYXU7JNdbLb7TVJM83J-MNURxB-YnTUuaFEdXC9ZM9O7z9-u1AtUBz6o/s320/Screen+Shot+2019-04-06+at+11.09.28+PM.png" width="320" /></a>2. 1 years experience with children - coaching, volunteering, teaching, Sunday school, foster parent, parent, babysitting, anything with children<br />
3. Legal eligibility to work in the US or Canada<br />
<br />
<b><a href="https://t.vipkid.com.cn/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=3d7d6bb01815966d216f43a7bdf9760a&refereeId=26728353" target="_blank">Interview</a> </b>- After your application, you will be emailed "the next steps." It will include links to slides and more information. This will happen each step of the way (if the process is different than in this list, follow the email, as things are always changing with VIPKid)<br />
<br />
You will be given 1 to 4 options (this is one of those odd inconsistencies). Your starting pay will be based on your performance in your interview and your past experience. Take the interview seriously. You may be asked questions and you may jump right in.<br />
<br />
1. Live interview - 10 min demo - this was a great experience and I believe is the most useful option in preparing me for the job. You get live feedback and an opportunity to ask questions.<br />
<br />
2. recorded 10 min demo - This is another common option and I have heard that is has great feedback as well.<br />
<br />
3. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taK1MgUGpx8&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">Smart Demo</a> (NEW!) - This option is available via the VIPKid App. You will review some VIPKid teaching basics, take a timed quiz (covering lesson objectives, repetition, speaking speed and language, TPR and modeling), and record your short (3 min or less) demo based on a slide.<br />
<br />
Express (has been replaced by the Smart Demo as of Late April 2019) - I have been told that if you wait "Interview Express" will come in<br />
the email as an option. This is a 3 min interview. This sounds great but you don't get the experience. I am also not sure if this option will say as I don't hear about it often.<br />
<br />
4. Coaching Days/<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7P9eyXk5Vc" target="_blank">Fast Pass</a> - This is a live 4 hour event/workshop/class in major cities with VIPKid teachers. You will want to take your laptop (with a camera) and have created a <a href="https://t.vipkid.com.cn/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=3d7d6bb01815966d216f43a7bdf9760a&refereeId=26728353" target="_blank">VIPKid account</a>. You don't need your resume and documents with you.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Certification</b> - When you pass your interview you will receive an email telling you the official up-to-date details with what mock classes you will prepare. You can find mock classes on YouTube, but please follow along with your slides and DO NOT COPY the videos online. Create your own style and have fun.<br />
<br />
You get to choose what you certify in but you will prepare 2 lessons. These specific two lessons may change and when you get to the certification room they will tell you which class you are teaching. The most common recommendation and I agree is "Interactive level 2 and 3."<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEingDOjehbehzt4W5-3NPl9XkC_y3lawYnj8lfmP0ipoVAcgUMO3prz5orL8wRXDWRD3k_TJgucQ9FzRJ-EflNdGy7rbQwEl9ATJAbiqptbTM5EHI7CzjXeQxVGheIaRwg8AAE5BRe_xi6_/s1600/IMG_20190328_145927282+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEingDOjehbehzt4W5-3NPl9XkC_y3lawYnj8lfmP0ipoVAcgUMO3prz5orL8wRXDWRD3k_TJgucQ9FzRJ-EflNdGy7rbQwEl9ATJAbiqptbTM5EHI7CzjXeQxVGheIaRwg8AAE5BRe_xi6_/s320/IMG_20190328_145927282+2.jpg" width="320" /></a>I would recommend taking one of the mentoring sessions before your class. Don't get down on yourself if you don't pass the first time. VIPKid is committed to training you. Think of this as free training. They will not let you teach until you are ready. Keep improving and growing. My understanding is that on average it takes two tries to pass. I know people have taken it 4 or more times. The more you take, the more prepared you feel. And you can't fail!!!<br />
<br />
I certified for levels 2-5 and within 1 week of being contracted, I certified for Trial classes. I would recommend going for as many as possible, but you are your own boss.<br />
<br />
<b>Contract & Info</b> - There are now multiple stages for the contract stage. Once you pass at least one certification stage you will move on to the contract stage where you will be ready to create your profile and take your TESOL certification. And then you can sign your contract.<br />
<br />
1.TESOL - The Chinese government is requiring all online teachers to have this certification. It was really good and VIPKid offers it for free, which other companies are not free but often still require it. If you have teaching certificates in the United States you may be able to skip this step, but parents will still want to see this certification. Hint: If you have studied education, it will be quick. I took one education course (and have studied linguistics on my own) and it was mostly review ;)<br />
<br />
2. Profile - I was thankful that I was prepared with my profile photo, two relaxed photos, and a video. Start thinking of these early on. You can record them and take them while you practice for your mock class and interview.<br />
<br />
3. It took my profile a week to be reviewed. While you wait you can take your other available certifications if you didn't earlier on.<br />
<br />
Like I said things change. Taking a week to review was strange. They may say that you have 3 days to move on to the next step. I took 5 and it was ok. I can't promise.<br />
<br />
I know it's frustrating, but it's the way it is. I think it's pretty ok considering I got to wear yoga pants or sweat pants for it all.<br />
<br />
4. Contract - This literally took 13 seconds since I had read through it previously (while waiting for my profile to be reviewed, but I do encourage you to read it).<br />
<br />
<b>Congratulations!</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Open some classes and if you skipped extra certifications this is a great time to get started on those. It takes an average of 2 to 4 weeks to begin getting bookings. I've only taught one class at this point. I will post more on what it's like from the inside once I feel more qualified.<br />
<br />
<br />
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bnXHEBL9rBg" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
*I got emails saying the next step would happen within 24-48 hours, this usually meant 5min - 7 days. I know this isn't our preference but my best advice is to maintain your professionalism and when you say you will be there, you show up. Don't be late. Make sure things are going to work and that you are there when you say you will be and laugh when it doesn't go perfect.<br />
<br />
<b>Other Topics</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Payment</b><br />
Base Pay $7-$9 per class. Classes are 25 minutes long.<br />
If you are on time you get + $1/class<br />
If you teach at least 30 classes/month + $0.50/class*<br />
If you teach at least 45 classes/month + $1/class*<br />
My base pay is $8/hour and I teach less than 45 classes, so I make $18/hour. I will likely teach more than 30 or 45 classes a month in the future. Then I will make $19 or 20/hour.<br />
<br />
But for everyone this = $14 - $22 per hour (there are ways to go higher than this)<br />
<br />
There are always incentives.<br />
Referrals - helping people through the hiring process (because it's kinda strange) = $100<br />
<br />
Also, if you cancel, you can loose incentive pay. My understanding of the contract is that it can't go below the $7 per class, but please check with someone who understands contracts better than I do if you are concerned. My advice is don't skip/miss work.<br />
<br />
*It's possible that there are one or both of these rules. I know that the $1 for 45 classes exists currently. I will edit this when I reach 30 or 45 classes. *wink**wink*<br />
<br />
<b>Props</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Use my code or <a href="https://www.vipkidteachers.com/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=3d7d6bb01815966d216f43a7bdf9760a&refereeId=26728353" target="_blank">link</a>, email me and once I see you as a referral, I will send you printable props to get you through the mock classes. You will also want a puppet or stuffed animal, a toy or two and dry erase board (I'll send you some tips to make these in the PDF document). Once you have taught your first class with VIPkid I will give you some options of other props and mail you more props to say thank you!! Don't stress over props! You do not need to go crazy! What you have around your home, the couple extras, and what I will provide you will get you a long way if you are on a budget.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I finished!!!</td></tr>

<div dir="ltr">
I am excited to announce that I just finished the Hindi tree on Duolingo.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Overall, I love Duolingo and think it's a great app for supplemental language study. I have been very out of language practice so this was really good to go back to.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<b>How did it go?</b></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
The tree is very short. I tested out of the alphabet but a lot of my basic vocab skills were lacking, so I didn't make it very far passed the first checkpoint (the awful alphabet section that I will discuss later on). I use Hinglish (along with the Indians I know in the US). So my vocabulary for American foods and numbers and family was severely lacking.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
But I was able to test out of moat levels individually, because the context and topic helped me remember and it was fairly easy to tell when I didn't know one or two vocab words in context.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I did have to complete one or two lessons from about 5 levels and then was typically able to test out. The biggest exception was the last two. I really struggled with those grammar concepts and even gave up a couple times because I was making so many mistakes. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
But I made it and I am excited for the content to get more challenging and I think I will do several review lessons (the dumbbell in the bottom right corner).</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<b>My thoughts on the course.</b></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Though it is officially <a href="http://
So my thoughts on Duolingo Hindi.">out of Beta</a> , I noticed a handful of errors or frustrating things. </div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkig2p3FtEDMkwhR2T7mv1nLJHmNe6avZw0Fgju7zRtiwkMLeEstsLAVcY6GhKvhvodLsBYdMKe0I14dYCNsZddhOd-q273m9vaD2DK8qaEu3Ab1GQSLCMXZeV9kRFBZZPYqz4Fylu29KP/s1600/51565988_1031553040368007_4519248654246084608_n.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkig2p3FtEDMkwhR2T7mv1nLJHmNe6avZw0Fgju7zRtiwkMLeEstsLAVcY6GhKvhvodLsBYdMKe0I14dYCNsZddhOd-q273m9vaD2DK8qaEu3Ab1GQSLCMXZeV9kRFBZZPYqz4Fylu29KP/s320/51565988_1031553040368007_4519248654246084608_n.png" width="160" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">'ne' is lacking an explanation.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div dir="ltr">
It over and over expects uses to use Indian English, rather than American, which was quite frustrating for me. "You people do that thing," and leaving off articles were common. I've heard similar frustrations about other trees from bilingual speakers living in the US as well. Either way, the Hindi tree does feel like it was designed for Indian Hindi learners, which in the long run is great and I hope it will help with communication issues between states and help unify North and South Indians. So though frustrating, it could actually be good.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I also wish that there were grammar explanations for the more challenging concepts and more complete explanations for others. This will come.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
A huge frustration is the Alphabet levels. They seem to be terrible. I have only passed one or two. I don't think I could have stuck with it if I had not tested out. I don't understand how they work or what is going on. I would highly recommend an app such as TenuguGo Hindi or even just making flashcards and memorizing before trying to use Duolingo before you know the alphabet. It took me two weeks (if I remember correctly) on TenguGo. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
But my biggest complaint is that it's too short!!! I want more!!!</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<b>Conclusion</b></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Overall, this is has been a great course and I will continue to use it. Being on my phone makes it so much more accessible than the other resources out there. Ans most of my frustrations will work themselves out, I'm sure...And if not, chalta hai, na?</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Thanks to the volunteers! And good enjoy your studies!!! </div>

<br />
I don't but I do continue to dabble regularly, so here is where I am at with each langanuge and what I have been doing the last couple months (mostly the last week, since our foster placement left, FS13).</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">

<b>Hindi </b>- I finished the Duolingo tree!!! This took me a while and here is <a href="https://hindiforchristmas.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">my review</a>. I only did it when I could use sound, so my main time to practice (at the Drs office or in lines, was not a Hindi option)<br />
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">
I have forgotten a lot of Hindi and am out of practice. I also get so shy when speaking, so texting is still my strength.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">

<b>Urdu</b> - I reviewed the alphabet yesterday with a group of Somali girls (one grew up in India and is half Indian and half Somali. And we were talking about the difference between Arabic and Urdu.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">

<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">
<b>Português</b> - Only duolingo (I completed this tree some time ago and am working toward completing level 2 on all leves. I also have played around some with our FS13 in Portunol, who speaks some Spanish.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">

<b>Spanish</b> - Our FS13 liked Spanish radio and it was a good go to when nothing else was appropriate.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">

<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">
<b>French </b>- I dabble in duolingo and sometimes text, mostly using a translator. I've also made it half way though Paul Nobles Learn French audio series while driving home from my chiropractor appointments.<br />
<br />
<b>Koine Greek </b>- I was more excited about Hebrew than Greek for a long time, I think because the alphabet is more interesting to me. But a year or so ago, my pastor told me to learn Greek instead, so then I quit Hebrew for a while thinking his argument was valid (but didn't do much with Greek, just out of apathy toward the langnuge and lack of free resources for Greek and finding that my favorite ones were modern Greek, though my best Hebrew resourse was modern as well, I'm sure)...<br />
<br />
...until now...<br />
<br />
Greek is new to me. I found a great free resource, the Ginoskos app, and I have been taking it more seriously (lol for the last week since our kiddo left). But it has been a lot of fun to start to learn words and their Biblical significance <3 So far I've focused on relearning the alphabet (which I've failed at a couple times). I've copied a few verses and analized a couple others (taking notes from the same resource). I've listened to a couple videos. And I am working on biblical vocabulary. I'm not good at it but one thing that has made Greek fun, is that it's applicable to Biblical study and touches your heart even if you only know one word.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">

<b>Sign Language</b> - I sign durring worship regularly (not up front, which requires more practice and learning). I also met with a woman at our church (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BtGs3migwJ4/" target="_blank">enjoy this story about the impact this meeting had on our FS13</a>) to plan a sign langangue lesson for a ladies nithgt with our church. I also found 2 new songs that I want to learn in ASL. There is also one that is really challenging that I've been practicing for over a year now. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">

<b>Arabic</b> - I'm amazed by how many Islamic friends (mostly Somalian, new to America) use Arabic and I know the words from Urdu...Every week I meet with a group of Somali girls and learn and use new Quaranic Arabic words. If I learn or study a dialect, I think it will be Sudanese, but for now, I just review the alphabet and use what I'm around for basic greetings and phrases.<br />
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">
<b>Somali </b>- I listen but have not studied much. There is now a girl that joins the times I meet with the Somali girls who is half Indian, so when the Somalis switch to Somali, we switch to Hindi (or just continue in English) instead of practicing the Somali.<br />
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.199999809265137px;">
<b>Lakota </b>- not practicing.</div>

<b>Latin </b>- not practicing (I completed my 25 hour goal, to work through scripture and I did it. The goal was largely to look through the book of John and see that has not been corrupted since the Vulgate...this gets into some nerdy apologetics stuff. But I think that will be the extent of my Latin for a long time.)<br />
<b>Italian </b>- not practicing.<br />
<b>All Asian languages (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) </b>- not practicing. I haven't done much with these, just played around with the alphabets and young children.<br />
<b>Hebrew </b>- not practicing.<br />
<b>African Dialects (Haitian Creole, Patois, Krio, Naija English) </b>- not practicing. Though I have used bits of Krio in chats with friends.</div>

<div dir="ltr">
Lol so what does the secret stash of a 5 look like? </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
They say that those people who are a 5 on the Enneagram have many interests that only people who share those interests are really aware of how deep these hobbies go.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
You guys tend to share my love of languages so you know all about it...But did you know that most of my friends have no idea how much I love languages, or that I can even speak multiple languages? </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Funny, I know. That is because I'm a 5, I guess. I have other secret hobbies too, but they are secrets for now.</div>

<div dir="ltr">
As you may also know the first semi-secret language I studied obsessively was Hindi. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
So how did I study early on? What made my Hindi study obsessive? </div>

In one series I had 137 lessons that I summarized typed up and took notes (from <a href="http://www.learning-hindi.com/all" target="_blank">Learning Hindi</a>) and in another series maybe 20 (from a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCIb9ddYWW0&list=PLSzKbnydlhPKBAzbFMVCjJaVWqqLBiCcz" target="_blank">YouTube </a>Series by Anil Mahato). I had created 30+ flashcards (before I began studying). One for each day and I created more as needed and repeated cards as well. </div>

I ended up being one of maybe 4 moderators for a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/LearnHindiLanguage/?ref=br_rs" target="_blank">Hindi learning group on Facebook</a> (also ran by Anil Mahato). The group over 10,000 people and has grown to over 13,000 people. </div>

This was simply a way to practice. I'm sure that I could have found the translations online but it was much more beneficial to go through the lyrics myself and see how words were used (knowing that Hindi, like the notorious Arabic, does not use proper grammar in songs).</div>

Since learning Portuguese, my Spanish is pretty awful. It tends to annoy native Spanish speakers and I can't understand Mexican Spanish at all so I just say I don't speak it. Here is a blog post from when <a href="http://hindiforchristmas.blogspot.com/2018/03/where-did-it-go.html?m=1" target="_blank">I realized I didn't speak Spanish</a> anymore.</div>

<div dir="ltr">
Where is my Spanish? Has it died? Or is it just gone?</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Well, I currently cannot speak Spanish, though its the only foreign language I've actually taken classes in and given speeches in.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Long story short, I ended up at a factory in the middle of the night and needed directions.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
The man I talked to was like "really you don't speak any Spanish?" </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I responded "un poco..." awkwardly forcing the extra u and m out of the words..."mas...pero...." and switched back to Português. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
He just shook his head as I continued to explain (in bad Portuñol) that I used to speak Spanish but now it's Portuguese.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
It is very strange. When I began learning Portuguese, in Foz do Iguassu I desperately wanted rid of my Spanish and now that my Spanish is passed I am mourning the loss.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
My Portuñol was so bad, everyone thought I was Argentinian except on the plane where the Columbian soccer player next to me successfully convinced the flight attendants I was his sister. This actually became quite awkward but helped me get through customs.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
....and now I can't even cough up a tiny bit of travelers Spanish...though, I will say the Portuguese has made my Spanish reading smoother, which is actually not practical at all. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
But I'm convinced that I still know Spanish even if no Spanish speaker believes me. I know it is in my brain somewhere just waiting to be resuscitated. </div>

Watching videos is an excellent way to learn a language after all listening and watching are two ways kids learn language and other skills. The Pimsleur method is even built upon the ways children naturally learn. More about that later.<br />
<br />
I think that Sesame Street Hindi Style AKA Gali Gali Sim Sim is proving to be a fun way to practice and learn Hindi. Some of the videos are absolutely hysterical. I particularly enjoyed the two videos below.<br />
<br />
I found these (go to the playlist for more) at about three months into my Hindi learning journey and can understand most of the words in the videos after watching a couple times. <br />

A Nepali Indian friend asked if it bothers me ”when people just speak in Hindi?” She continued, “I think it would drive me nuts if everyone around me was talking and I couldn’t understand.”
This is a good question…<br />
<br />
The simple answer is “no, it has not bothered me yet.” I really enjoy observing and using these times to learn and listen. Every time I have wanted to understand more or need clarification I always ask. <br />
<br />
So why does it not bother me? Haha probably because I am a bit socially awkward to begin with. I don’t mind observing nor do I mind that isolated feeling while in a large group, in fact I really enjoy it. I love people but am fairly introverted. That “alone in a crowd feel” can be incredibly nice…though I don’t really feel alone with my Indian friends. Most of the time I can pick up enough….though the times I am lost are nice too. Sometimes I just don’t talk even when I do know what’s going on. I suppose it’s less awkward to have the language “barrier” as an excuse.<br />
<br />
The most important reason I don’t mind is the answer to the question “what is the best way to learn a language?” To go to the country…unfortunately I tend to do things backwards. I go to the country then a month after returning home decide to commit to learning the language. Spending time with people speaking the language you are trying to learn is really the only way to pick up a language…<br />
<br />
The other friend in the car joined in and stated “they don’t do it on purpose, it’s just habit.” We continued the discussion for a bit longer (and by we I mean I continued to ponder over the question in my head…I will share my ponderings in future posts.)<br />
<br />
I nodded in agreement as we continued to sing along to Bollywood music and drove off.

My <a href="http://hindiforchristmas.blogspot.com/2014/08/2-language-study-plan.html" target="_blank">2 Language Study Plan</a> worked alright for a while but I realized that people in other parts of the world are awake when they are awake and there were certainly nights where I was chatting with people in both languages. <br />
<br />
I found that changing the times was helpful but even more so is consciously switching off one for one person and switching it back on for another person.<br />
<br />
This is easier said than done. I can't tell you how many times I would use a word from wrong language only to notice when my friend responded with "what are you saying?" It typically would happen when I couldn't think of the right word and I was unaware that my brain just replaced it so I would need to look it up the word in the correct language.<br />
<br />
Also talking to myself is helpful. It takes a lot more effort to think in Hindi. Portuguese is getting pretty easy to think in. Krio just happens. And French is quite difficult.<br />
<br />
My biggest struggle with the Hindi is still the sentence structure because my vocabulary is decent (except I have forgotten a lot) and you can use English and be understood.<br />
<br />
I still don't have Hindi and Portuguse figured out, but I think I will be needing to add in some Spanish to the mix. There have been several times people will speak to me in Spanish. I understand and then respond in portunol or just plain old portuguese.<br />
<br />
This is not ok. I am around enough Spanish that I actually need Spanish in my town...so I am also working on separating Spanish and Portuguese in my head. This should not be too difficult, except I do fear loosing my Portuguese before I get decent and not getting it back....ever. Will see.<br />
<br />
So my goal October - December Goal (or until I re-write goals):<br />
Speak Hindi and to keep languages separate in messages, conversation and my brain.<br />
<br />
Thank guys!!! </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
My good Indian friend is absolutely crazy.<br />
<br />
One evening we got into a bit of an argument while drinking a bit of wine in my art studio. This friend, to be quite honest, is one of the most American Indians I know but not ABCD as can be seen in <a href="http://hindiforchristmas.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2013-12-25T23:08:00-08:00&max-results=7&start=42&by-date=false" target="_blank">another conversation with him</a>.<br />
<br />
Me: Nahin, nahin bas tujhe pagal baat hai! Ananth* it is technically a wine yard its actually a vineyard</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A: They are the same word...What we are drinking and thing grapes grow on are the same.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Me: No Ananth they are not. Tum pagal ho yaar!<br />
<br />
A: What is the difference?<br />
<br />
Me: One is Va and the other Wa?<br />
<br />
A: ok, so it's the same sound...<br />
<br />
Me: No, it's like Ta, Tt, Th and Tth, Da and Dha... They all sound the same to me (and I'm pretty sure I said them all the same) but people keep telling me they are not the same...<br />
<br />
A: Thik hai, thik hai<br />
<br />
A couple days later I texted Ananth with an explanation of how to make the different sounds...I am still not sure if he really thought they were the same or if it was the vine talking... <br />
<br />
<br />
*Name has been changed to protect the involved party.Name has been changed a second time because he didn't like the name I picked out.<br />
<br />
**Excuse my bad Hinglish...That is part of why I started this blog...Is to one day be able to look back and feel good because I have gotten that much better.</div>

<div dir="ltr">
Interestingly while in Brazil I didn't find myself missing American culture or dealing with culture shock becuase Brazil was so different from the US.<br />

<br />
My culture shock for the first few weeks was that I was around too many Americans, in a mall several times per week, surrounded by people flaunting their money, around too much English (haha yeah, I was around more Hindi with you guys than I was portuguese for a couple weeks), couldn't really take my shoes off indoors and couldn't eat with my hands. The food was not spicy which I craved...one night I added several teaspoons of hot sauce to Arabian food...and I was saying things like "bahut obrigada" and "muito dhanyavaad." And I'm still not convinced that I know how to convey the meaning of "thik hai" with the head bob in Brazilian culture.<br />
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
The second part of my trip, however, was a very different experience. I was able to experience many of the challenges I crave with travel. I was around no english for most of it. Some days I had a translator for workshops and seminars and such but evenings and mornings there was typically no english. After 5 days of no English, my brain could actually think in Portuguese which was incredible...I really did and still do love Brazil. The food may not have been spicy, but it was delicious and flavorful. And I know y'all like to claim to like sweets...but y'all ain't got nothin' on Brazilian sweets.<br />
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
But anyways this post isn't about Brazil. It's about being homesick from you all...</div>
<div dir="ltr">
I knew I was a bit crazy about and may have been excessively-fascinated with Indian culture. But I didn't quite realize how much the last year was impacted by you guys. I didn't expect being away from your culture to be as challenging as it was. I am so thankful you let me genuinely experience life with you all....I will miss you all and always have a space in my heart for you and your culture. One day I hope to really experience Indian culture again and really gain a grasp on Hindi...<br />
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Português has a word, saudade, it's used to describe the emptiness when something or someone has gone away. It is certain that I am having this experience for you all...</div>
<div dir="ltr">
Eu tenho saudades pra vocês...beijos e abraços!<br />

Its been 24 hours and my brain is kinda freaking out. I'm exhausted and feel like I am a major pain in the ass because people have to explain everything several times and the tension and the frustration and knowing I'm bad at Portuguese is is making it more difficult to understand, speak and recal what I do know...</div>

Por outro lado, eu gosto la experiência porque é unique e eu sai que eu vou crescer mas que todas las otras situações em Brazil. Eu vou aprender mais português. Os pesoas tem muitos patience comigo também. Elles são fantásticos. </div>

<div dir="ltr">
My portuguese is atrocious and its frustrating because I want to connect with people deeper but I can't because the words must be simplified so much. Even my thoughts in English are being dumbed down. "I want sit. I like the day in the past. I make paint water."</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
</div>

I miss home (mostly my husband) and I miss spicy food, eating with my hands and taking my shoes off indoors. I miss Laramie and am sad that there is a possibility that I may never return. I am sad that I'm not yet in Washington and I'm sad that Jim is stuck there without me.</div>

<div dir="ltr">
Saldages é minha palavra favorite en la idioma português. E eu penso que é descritivo de a cultura beleza. Uma cultura com muito emoções linda e sentimental. As pesoas aqui é carinhosos e dulce. Eles pensam com suas emoções. E eu gosto disso. Tenho saldages pra meus amigos en Santa Catarina e eu terei muitos pra pesoas aqui, pierto de Brasília, e todo o país.</div>

One of my favorite ways to practice language is listening to Pimsleur or other audio lessons in the car when I'm by myself.<br />
<br />
I find that Pimsleur is great at getting you to think in the language. It uses similar techniques to how we acquired our native language and simplifies it all for the listener.<br />
<br />
If you haven't tried Pimsleur, give it a try. I listen through my local library but you can also purchase the CD set on Amazon or other audio book sources. These are just the courses I have completed but there are many more languages available.<br />

<div dir="ltr">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF9MSUH93c8ys_zCnMdcYHXMH7O7jyqkbiQeCc7NgQVNfTaRToVMQRkw-oW9tTfr0TK8M9DINmiHrncqg-yEHJD9OCi4PAooPUqvI8RQArZZfuTH3RnL3WlfVXlSYJFk8Xg4MEAbfuMBh5/s1600/20140804_154732.jpg" style="font-family: sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF9MSUH93c8ys_zCnMdcYHXMH7O7jyqkbiQeCc7NgQVNfTaRToVMQRkw-oW9tTfr0TK8M9DINmiHrncqg-yEHJD9OCi4PAooPUqvI8RQArZZfuTH3RnL3WlfVXlSYJFk8Xg4MEAbfuMBh5/s640/20140804_154732.jpg" /></a></div>
<div dir="ltr">
People in brazil have a strangely beautiful and amazing ability to wait patiently and maintain relaxed when things <i>não funcionam.</i></div>
<div dir="ltr">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
I talked to a man on a bus about this. I pondered "<i>eu não entendo como pesoas em brazil tem muitos patience. É muito interesante pra mim.</i>"</div>
<div dir="ltr">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
I'm pretty sure this man ended up missing his flight because the bus didn't come on time. Yet...</div>
<div dir="ltr">
We calmly talked about brazillian patience, lack of function, and a myriad of other topics for over an hour (em Português, I might add). </div>
<div dir="ltr">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<i>Em los estados unidos pesoas</i>....grrrr (<i>meu mao português </i>at work here...)..." In the US we want our money back if we stand, waiting, almost two hours for food.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
But, I suppose it is rare that we would ever wait that long in the first place. We refuse to pay and walk out long before the 30 minute marker. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
If something goes wrong we get angry and try to get the priority service we paid for. After all we either earned or deserve it. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
At the end of out conversation, I think this man and I came to the conclusion that Brazilians are used to things <i>não está funcionando</i> so there is "no problem" and a backup plan will come along so that eventually things will work out even if they don't work... But Brasileiros sabem that eventually it all works out and not staying relaxed doesn't help.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
If you wait through, it will all work out, even if it doesn't function properly or work. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
Se você tem patience, todas as coisas vão funcionar, mesma que ele não funciona direito.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">

<div dir="ltr">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
I will end this post with a message I sent my husband while I was waiting for a delayed airplane with some Spanish-speaking imagrants coming to Pasco to work...</div>
<div dir="ltr">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
"well a cool fact...Portuguese and Spanish both use the verb esperar. It means "to hope" but is used for "to wait" as well. So you are literally hoping for something or someone. I like it. I think it shows insight into the hopeful mentality and patience Latin Americans have...anyways back to hoping :) love you"</div>

<div dir="ltr">
<div dir="ltr">
I typed a thank you in Hindi that I planned to read at the going away party when we left Laramie but forgot it :( and I'm pretty sure it actually made no sense...as I shared it online to have it proofread and was told it didn't make sense (when I get back to the US I will share it anyways. Ok well, when I find my computer)</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
This letter was for the many Indian friends that we made over the years but especially in that last little bit in Laramie, Wyoming.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTN2C3zAS01TB_AF1QuYnkm-d63yKZj-OpgUHUTHqxYpx0Kauhmn9h_ej6NwPcgJH3Azvyfa2h2tZ2t-hOcwXEaNnrICxhpawK8SEZWRm0NbuKLj_-RWhyphenhyphenWz9wpCQvp6xTiZ7YOwLtggfj/s1600/20140415_152129.jpg" style="font-family: sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTN2C3zAS01TB_AF1QuYnkm-d63yKZj-OpgUHUTHqxYpx0Kauhmn9h_ej6NwPcgJH3Azvyfa2h2tZ2t-hOcwXEaNnrICxhpawK8SEZWRm0NbuKLj_-RWhyphenhyphenWz9wpCQvp6xTiZ7YOwLtggfj/s640/20140415_152129.jpg" /></a></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I wanted to thank you all for welcoming Jim and I into your community. It was really special to be a part of your family. I've heard missionaries, and less often but other travelers as well, talk about going somewhere and being welcomed into the culture.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I now have a better understanding of how special that really is. There is a difference between hanging out and getting to know people and really being a part of it all and I feel like you guys blessed us with the opportunity to really be a part of your lives and culture.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
It's funny becuase after returning to Wyoming I was seriously considering grad school at Khala Bhavan. But when we realized it was a longer program than I had originally thought we decided against it. This past year, though in Wyoming (possibly the place on earth that is the least like India), I really was able to experience a mini-India and it was beautiful. I learned so much about food, culture, religion, languages, social norms, cricket, and fell even more in love with your culture and people.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I began by wanting to learn Hindi. I honestly belive my goals desires changed to simply being friends and sharing life which was so beautiful.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I will never forget my last year in Wyoming and the times that we shared. I love each and every one of you guys. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
